Performance ensembles

The Clarence City Band has four performance ensembles.

Concert Band
Leader – David Hardstaff

The Clarence City Concert Band is a mixed wind and percussion C Grade ensemble with over 40 playing members. The band draws on an extensive library and plays a varied repertoire of modern concert band, jazz, blues, rock, and easy listening material. Our players come from all walks of life and span three generations.

The Concert Band’s regular performance commitments include performances for the Clarence City Council including their Australia Day Ceremony, a range of concerts with other ensembles in the Clarence City Band group, Carols by Candlelight in a number of locations across Clarence City as well as competing at State, National and Eisteddfod competitions. The band has had much competition success over the past few years and was placed 3rd in the open C Grade at the 2017 National Band Championships.

Big Band
Leader – Jesse Bowden

The Clarence City Big Band plays a wide range of repertoire including jazz, rock, blues, and popular music in both the traditional full 18-piece big band and smaller Jazz Combo formats.

The Big Band performs at a variety of Jazz Festivals in Southern Tasmania, in-house Jazz Nights, community fairs and markets and regularly performs in conjunction with other ensembles in the Clarence City Band group.

Brass Ensemble
Leader – Jan Kuplis

The Clarence City Brass Ensemble is a traditional European-style brass ensemble with percussionists. The band plays a wide range of music, ranging from traditional marches, hymns, and concert pieces, through to modern pop, jazz, and classical.

The ensemble performs in the wider community at a variety of events, such as the Hobart Boer War ceremony and the South Arm Remembrance Day ceremony. The ensemble also performs at local eisteddfods, markets, fairs, and concerts.

New members are always welcome.

Leader – Michael Young

Crosswinds is a 7-piece chamber ensemble, comprised predominantly of woodwind instruments. Crosswinds performs a diverse range of repertoire, ranging from Baroque through to Contemporary Classical. The ensemble is committed to performing new music, and regularly performs works by local composers.

Crosswinds regularly participates in local eisteddfods, and is regularly invited to perform for private functions and community events.
